Citra Hops – Bold, Citrus-Forward American Aroma Hop
Citra is one of the most sought-after hop varieties in the world, especially prized for late additions and dry hopping in IPAs, Pale Ales, and American-style beers. With a high alpha acid content, it can also be used for bittering, though many brewers prefer it as an aroma hop to avoid its sometimes harsh bittering profile.
Developed by the Hop Breeding Company—a joint venture between John I. Haas, Inc. and Select Botanicals Group—Citra was officially released in 2008 after extensive trials with craft breweries including Sierra Nevada and Deschutes. Originally bred by Gene Probasco in 1990, it boasts a complex lineage including Hallertau Mittelfrüh, Tettnanger (US), Brewer’s Gold, and East Kent Golding.
As the name suggests, Citra is famous for its citrus-forward character, driven by exceptionally high myrcene content. Expect bold notes of grapefruit, lime, and tropical fruit, making it the go-to hop for juicy, hop-saturated beers.
